Crane permits in Kansas City, Missouri
If the crane or its outriggers take up any street, sidewalk or alley in KCMO, you need a traffic control permit from Public Works.
Get a quoteWhere to apply
KCMO Public Works takes traffic control permit applications only through Compass KC, the city's online permit system. Make an account before you need it.
What it costs
An $88 non-refundable application fee, plus a lane or sidewalk closure fee based on what you close and for how long (Ordinance 211030).
What you need
A traffic control plan that follows the MUTCD: where the cones, signs and flaggers go. Many crane companies and traffic control outfits draw these up as a service.
Emergencies
If a crane has to go up on short notice, KCMO allows emergency closures to be permitted the next business day. Don't count on that for planned work.
Private property
If the crane sets up entirely on your lot and nothing swings over the street, you usually don't need this permit. The operator can tell you after a look.
